Who regulates charities?
The Charity Commission regulates charities in England and Wales.
It is responsible for registering charities, monitoring annual accounts/reports and identifying and resolving problems with individual charities through investigation. It has legal powers including the removal of charitable status. The Commission also provides support and information to charities.
Charities operating in Northern Ireland are registered with the Inland Revenue. The Inland Revenue acts as registrar and collects and monitors published accounts. It does not have the same responsibility as the Charity Commission for supporting charities.
Charities in Scotland are now regulated by the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR).
