Advertising in newspapers and magazines
What it costs and what it raises
The main costs are for advertising space (charged as either the size of the area on the page of a publication or the cost of inserting a leaflet) and for the production of the advert or leaflet.
Relatively small numbers of people respond to these forms of advertising and, as with other routes used to bring in new supporters, the initial promotion will normally cost the charity money.
However, new supporters brought in through advertising and leaflet inserts tend to keep giving for some years, and to give relatively high amounts, so the charity recoups their investment and gains additional income over time.
