What is it?

Street fundraising (also called ‘face-to-face’ fundraising) is the technique where teams of bib-wearing people sign up passers-by to give money to charity by direct debit or standing order.

Some people who dislike these fundraising teams refer to them as "charity muggers" or "chuggers".

The face to face technique was introduced to Britain from Austria in 1997, when Greenpeace started using it.

In the past few years it has grown dramatically as charities found it successful, raising millions of pounds and raising their profile.
