Key facts about charities in Scotland
There are currently 50,000 voluntary organisations in Scotland, more than half of which (25,700) are regulated as charities or mutuals.
Many of these organisations have been set up to provide a service. 37% are in Social Welfare, 14% in community development, 12% in housing and 11% are in Arts and Sports.
Scottish charities are concentrated in Edinburgh (13%) and Glasgow (11%).
At least 65% of Scottish charities have an annual income of under £25,000 a year.
Donations by the public accounted for 8% of the sector's income in 2004.
