Key facts about charities in England and Wales
At the end of March 2007 there were 168,794 ‘main’ (i.e. not a subsidiary of another organisation) charities listed on the Charity Commission register.
The total annual income of these main registered charities stood at £42.138 billion.
Nearly 60% of registered charities are very small with an annual income of £10,000 or less. Although they represent the bulk of the sector their income is very small, accounting for less than 1% of the income recorded.
Around 8% of charities in England and Wales receive 90% of the total annual income reported to the Commission.
The largest 651 charities (0.39% of those on the register) attract over 49% of the total income.
